Marty Simpson: High School All-American

Marty Simpson's stage act is filled with stories from his former athletic career which included being an all-american high school athlete as well as a full scholarship football player for the University of South Carolina.

High School All-American

Marty was a former high school All-American football player and was the first South Carolinian ever named to the first team All-USA Today Football Team. He tied the state record in South Carolina with a 57 yard field goal his junior season and then broke his own record with a 61 yarder his senior year. During his junior year Marty kicked the walk-off game winning field goal in the 4A-State Championship game versus, the then number 14 nationally ranked Gaffney Indians. The final score of that contest was 3 to 0.

Marty Simpson: Full Scholarship College Athlete

Full Scholarship College Athlete

We use the term "athlete" broadly here. Marty was a place-kicker and punter in college,  so the word athlete may or may not apply. Marty went on to receive a full scholarship and start 44 games for the Gamecocks of South Carolina. He was the team's leading scorer in 1992 and was the first player to ever score points in the SEC for South Carolina. He kicked two field goals versus Georgia to take a 6 to 0 lead in the first ever SEC game. The Gamecocks would go on to lose that contest 28 to 6 but that doesn't change the fact that Marty is the answer to the great trivia question: "Who scored the first six points for South Carolina in the SEC?" Below are some of Marty's kicks in college.

Head Varsity High School Coach

Marty was his school's Varsity Head Football Coach and took his team all the way to the State Championship game his first year as head coach. He was also certified to teach theatre and drama, so he always says he only, "acted like the football coach." Here are some clips of his coaching days.

Marty's comedy act is filled with stories from his playing and coaching days. He retells multiple stories about when he was lucky enough to coach Samkon Gado, who went on to star for the Green Bay Packers, Miami Dolphins, and St. Louis Rams.

Here is a video of Samkon Gado while with the St. Louis Rams. His quote after the game refers to his old high school coach (Coach Simpson.)

For another, how about that juke he put on Jets safety James Ihedigbo?
“I gave him an old move that my high school coach taught me called ‘the double,’ ” Gado said.

Marty Simpson: Girls Fast-Pitch Softball Coach

Varsity Girl's Fast-Pitch Softball

Marty was fortunate enough to coach the girl's softball team for one season. The team had never had a winning record and had never won more than four games in any one season. Marty coached those girls on to a winning record. Shown below is a creative play that Marty learned from his old high school coach, Dwayne Jones. The play is called "Marla," and is named after the goofy girl in the movie "A League of Their Own."

Marty Simpson: Rivals.com Football Columnist

Marty served as a featured columnist for GamecockCentral.com, the official Rivals.com site for the University of South Carolina Gamecock football team. He authored two articles a week. One was a satirical look at topics concering Gamecock football and the other was a full in-depth video analysis and break-down which was the only one of its kind during the fall of 2011.

Here is a link to one of the break-down articles written after the South Carolina versus Georgia game.

Marty Simpson: Sports Comedy Clips

Marty's Comedy Act

Marty pulls no punches making fun of the parents of athletes who cannot ever seem to accurately judge their own child's abilities. It is these stories which usually resonate with the attendees of the event since everyone knows a few parents like the ones Marty discusses on stage.

Marty Simpson: Custom Sports Comedy Show

Marty is also willing to customize some of his routine to fit the needs of the particular banquet. Since he coached five different sports and was a P.E. and Health Teacher as well as being the Drama Director at his school, Marty is quite capable of relating to any type of athletic contest or event.

If the particular event coordinator wishes to get with Marty ahead of time and plan certain material around the subject matter of the particular event, this is very doable and quite common. However, it is worth noting that such customizations make the fee structure go up. These types of events will need to be negotiated well ahead of time.

Overall, Marty is very versatile when it comes to Athletic or Sports type comedy events. His normal act which he performs for churchs, clubs, and corporations all across America is filled with his antics from his coaching and playing days. So to structure a set around a particular athletic or sports banquet is a no-brainer for Marty.
